Will I be able to walk 36km?
If you can comfortably walk 10km, then you will be able to complete the Royal Canal Camino. Remember there will be lots of breaks and food-stops along the way.
What time does the walk start at?
36km Walk
The 36 km option will start in two waves, with the first at 7am and the second at 8am from Abbeyshrule village.
27km Walk
The 27 km option will start at 9:30am from Brannigan Harbour, Ballymahon.
18km Walk
The 18km option will start at 11am from Corlea Bog Trackway Centre.
Important: Participants should ensure they are at the event HQ in Longford town 45 minutes before the starting time to register and get the bus out to the starting point in Abbeyshrule.
Where do the walks finish?
All three walks finish at St Mel’s College, Longford N39 XP92.
What is the route like?
The route is mostly off road along the Royal Canal Greenway trail. It has a flat profile with a nice under foot surface.
How will I get to the starting route?
Coach transfer will be provided from the event HQ in Longford Town to the starting points in Abbeyshrule and Corlea. This is included in your entry fee.
What facilities will be provided during the walk?
Food stops and toilet facilities will be provided at three points along the route.
Will there be support during the walk?
Road crossings will be marshalled and walk leaders will be interspersed along the route.
How long will the walk take?
Depending on your speed, the 36km walk will take between 6 and 8 hours.
In the interests of safety all walkers must reach the three refreshment stops before the sweep-up leaders in each group. Walkers unable to achieve this very modest pace must accept a lift to the next food stop or exit the walk and proceed at their own risk.
How much does it cost to take part in the event?
Tickets cost €50 each. This covers registration cost, insurance, bus transport to the start, three food stops on the route, and a hot meal at the end of the walk.
What if I have purchased a ticket but cannot attend?
The Royal Canal Camino is non-refundable, and in the event of cancellation due to covid, tickets are valid for the next walk.
Is this a one-off event?
No. The Royal Canal Camino will be held annually, taking place in May of each year.
Where do the proceeds go?
The Royal Canal Camino is organised by Longford Athletics Club, a voluntary club. All funds raised will go towards the completion of the club’s new Indoor Training Centre. This community facility will be a great benefit the children that participate in Longford Athletics Club activities each year. It will also provide a much need resource to many local community and sporting groups.
